Why Substack? Why now?

Hint: Billionaires don't need your money, but small brands sure do.

If you’ve ever scrolled through TikTok or Instagram and thought, Wow, it’s all the same shit over and over, you’re not wrong. The world has gotten way too bland. Algorithmically optimized. And beneath all that sameness is a system that rewards size and mass consumption, not soul and original taste. Original thought.

We are being screamed at 24/7 by strangers, pushed crappy products and temporary dopamine hits, and for what? “Connection” and “community”? I think not. It’s capitalism at it’s greatest hour—but I’m here to stand up to the Big Guys! Someone needs to curate the internet for you and tell you about rad people and products (made small batch, not mass manufactured), because it’s bleak out there.

Most of the “must-have” lists you see? They're handpicked not by curious editors, but by PR reps, affiliate dashboards, and algorithms trained to push whatever earns the highest commission. I know this because I used to be a magazine editor. I’ve seen firsthand how the “our picks” lists get made (items are chosen from the PR gift pile). Meanwhile, affiliate links dominate influencer culture—because why recommend something from a small brand when you could earn 15% by linking to Amazon or Target?

The system is not set up to support small businesses. It's set up to scale big ones even bigger. And I’m tired of watching the little guys get pushed to the bottom of the feed.

So here’s my response: It’s called What She’s Having.
It’s a newsletter. It’s a shopping list. It’s a tiny revolution.
I’ll share what I’m loving, coveting, and buying from independent brands and artists. No PR spin. Just real finds from real people making real things.

Because when we buy from small businesses, we’re not just buying stuff.
We’re voting for creativity over convenience. For personality over polish.
